Meters
The utility meters that connect your sites to the grid
A meter in Texture is a utility AMI meter. It's a type of device, and it's what ties a site to the grid: Texture places each meter at a service point, links it to a site, and rolls its readings up to the transformer, feeder, and substation above it.
What a meter records#
| Reading | Interval |
|---|---|
| Energy used from the grid (kWh) | 15 minutes |
| Energy sent to the grid, for meters that export (kWh) | 15 minutes |
| Voltage, with minimum and maximum | 5 minutes |
AMI readings typically arrive one to two days late, because Texture collects them from your meter data system once a day. When a meter is first connected, Texture also imports its history, meter by meter.
How a meter finds its place#
Texture uses the meter number to place each meter:
- Service point. Texture looks for exactly one service point in your GIS data with the same meter number. Use the meter number from GIS, not from your billing system.
- Site. Texture links the meter to the site at that service point's location.
- Grid. Through its service point, the meter sits under a transformer, feeder, and substation.
If no service point matches, or more than one does, the meter's readings still arrive, but it has no site and no place on the map. Texture tries again each time new readings arrive, so a meter is placed once its service point is loaded. See Troubleshoot missing data.
How readings roll up#
Grid elements mostly don't have readings of their own. A transformer's usage is the sum of the meters placed beneath it, and the same goes for feeders and substations. SCADA adds direct measurements at substations. See Grid elements.
Meters and other devices at a site#
A site can have both a utility meter and devices behind it, such as a battery or EV charger. Texture links each of them to the site, not to each other.
