Organizations and workspaces
Your company in Texture, and the separate environments inside it
Your organization is your company in Texture. A workspace is a separate environment inside it, such as production or sandbox. Your organization holds your team and its settings. Each workspace holds its own data.
What belongs where#
| Organization | Workspace |
|---|---|
| Members and their roles | Sites, contacts, devices, and meters |
| Sign-in settings: SSO and multi-factor authentication | Programs you've added, with their enrollments and events |
| Name, logo, industry, and units | API keys and destinations |
| Private programs Texture has made available to you | Alerts and alert settings |
| Audit log | Boards and collections |
Data in one workspace isn't visible from another. Members, roles, and sign-in settings apply across all your organization's workspaces.
Workspaces#
Every organization starts with two workspaces:
- production, for your real data
- sandbox, for testing, for example with the Developer quickstart
Keeping them apart prevents mistakes such as a test script sending a command to a real device. Admins can create more. See Manage workspaces.
Devices can't be moved between workspaces. To move a device, reconnect it in the new workspace and delete it from the old one.
Every member of your organization can see every workspace, except members with the Scoped role.
Switching workspaces#
Use the Workspace switcher at the bottom-left of the dashboard. Only the selected workspace's data appears, and Texture remembers your last workspace the next time you sign in.
Shared workspaces#
Another organization can share one of its workspaces with you, for example a partner giving you access to its data. Shared workspaces appear on the Shared tab of the Workspace switcher, with the name of the organization that owns them. You can leave a shared workspace from Settings → Workspaces.
Organizations#
Belonging to more than one organization#
You can be a member of several organizations, for example if you work with more than one utility. When you sign in, Texture opens the organization you used last. To change, open your user menu and click Switch organizations.
Joining your company's organization#
When you sign up with a work email, Texture shows any organization whose domain matches your email's domain exactly, and you can request access. An admin approves or denies the request. Otherwise, an admin can invite you. See Set up your Texture account.
Owner#
The person who created the organization is its owner. The owner can manage the organization and can't be removed from it. Ownership can't be transferred.
Admins can rename the organization in Settings → Organization. Organizations can't be deleted from the dashboard.
